In 2023, the conversation gained significant momentum in the EU with the adoption of the Artificial Intelligence Act. This landmark legislation aims to clarify the complexities of AI usage for EU member states and those aspiring to join their ranks, setting the stage for robust national regulatory frameworks. Serbia is no exception to this trend.
As Serbia inches closer to EU membership, it has been proactively developing a legal framework for artificial intelligence. The journey kicked off with the introduction of the Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy for 2020 to 2025, ratified in 2019. Yet, the rapid advancement and increasing adoption of AI technologies in Serbia have highlighted the urgent need for an updated approach. As a result, efforts are already underway to craft a new Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy for 2025 to 2030, with an anticipated completion date in 2024.
In tandem with these strategic plans, a draft Law on Artificial Intelligence is also in the pipeline. A dedicated task force within the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation is spearheading this crucial initiative. Set to be enacted in the first half of 2025, this legislation aims to address various challenges related to AI technology, paving the way for a regulatory environment that fosters responsible development and safe application.
As Serbia embarks on this regulatory journey, aligning its initiatives with the EU’s AI Act will be essential. The successful implementation of these strategies and laws will not only empower the nation to harness the full potential of AI but also strengthen its position in the global tech arena. These ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to innovation, all while ensuring safety and ethical standards in the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence.
